We are very grateful to have been given the 2 cases in the Skipton Town Hall entrance lobby until the end of Jan 2025, to literally ‘show case’ the history of Mill Bridge Gallery, the art of the our talented resident and exhibiting artists.
Skipton Town Hall has a fabulous museum, short listed for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024, gallery space with a programme of inspiring exhibitions, and regular concerts and shows in the beautifully refurbished main hall. It is also where Skipton’s Tourist information can be found, so a destination for all visiting and living in Skipton.
Gallery feature in The Yorkshire Dalesman
There is a great feature on Mill Bridge Gallery and its artists in the August edition of The Yorkshire Dalesman. It is available to buy locally or on subscription: https://www.dalesman.co.uk ‘History in the making’, written by Niamh Ward, explores the story of the gallery as an historic building, its development as a gallery, and its current incarnation as an exhibition and work space.
New Artists in Residence and New Artwork
Artists Mark Butler, sculptor, and Robert Keep, mixed media, have moved into the upstairs space in the gallery. They will be using one room as a studio space, working on new pieces and welcoming visitors on Thursdays and Fridays, and displaying and selling their artwork in the landing gallery area.
Downstairs 4 artists share the space: Peter Wilkin, photography and mixed media, Mandy Dye, mixed media painting, Sharon Heap, ceramics, and Alistair Innes, turned wood art. Each artist will be in the Gallery one Saturday per month. Please email if you would like to know exact dates and arrange to meet any of the artists.
The gallery continues to exhibit Scanner graphs by Margaret Hockney, and black and white photography from the 1950s by Henry Meyer.
More information about each of the artists can be found on the Artists page.

Stained glass tour
On September 1st there will be an informal tour of the stained glass in Holy Trinity Church Skipton with Jonathan Cooke ACR at 12 midday..
Jonathan served a four-year apprenticeship at York Glaziers’ Trust, where he learnt the traditional skills for the creation, conservation and restoration of stained glass, working on the restoration of York Minster following the 1984 fire. He has been a regular contributor at conferences in the UK, Europe and the USA and is a leading exponent of restoration glass painting of all periods and styles. He is a member of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral’s Fabric Advisory Committee, stained glass adviser to several Diocesan Advisory Committees, a former adviser to the Glaziers’ Trust and member of Churchcare’s stained glass committee. Major restoration projects include the Soane Museum and the grand staircase at Cliffe Castle.
Jonathan has published a book on glass painting techniques and made a special study of many 19th century stained glass firms, some of whose windows are represented at Holy Trinity.
This is a free event, but booking is advised.
Skipton Now ~ Culture and Heritage Event
We are taking part in the Skipton Now Festival, a month-long programme of events throughout August to celebrate our culture and heritage.
Our Artist in Residence, John Sherwood, will be sharing his ideas and inspirations and children are invited to make sketches and collect materials to create their own artwork.
‘Seeing and Sketching, Responding and Recording’
Informal art sessions for children at Mill Bridge Gallery
4th and 11th August, from 11 am to 4 pm.
Join us at the inspiring 17th-century Mill Bridge Gallery for an introduction to keeping a visual diary. Based on John Sherwood’s ‘Amalgams’, children will be able to sketch, photograph, and collect things that inspire them and discover how to turn their collections into pieces of art.
Suitable for ages 6 to 16 years. Bring a parent and be prepared to take photos. All other materials provided.
Led by artist Rachel Errington, these sessions are given in a welcoming, safe and relaxing space at Mill Bridge Gallery, and encourage you to experiment with colour, mark making, abstraction, and composition.
You will be guided to find your individual style and ways of working with the reassurance that there is no right or wrong way to ‘make’ art.
The sessions are a journey into self expression and encourage you to take your own path.
No painting experience is needed and all materials are provided.
£60 for 4 classes. Please email the gallery for start date and further details: contact@millbridgegallery.co.uk
