Roland Styles MA is a studio potter and ceramic artist based in Skipton. His thrown and hand-built pieces are made for decorative impact ; designs are based on patterns and forms found in nature. He uses a diverse range of clays from coarsely grogged clay to smooth porcelain, carefully matching materials to the processes chosen for each piece. Surface decoration is applied using impressions taken from loosely woven fabrics and from objects found on the sea shore. The textured clay is enhanced with coloured slips, oxides and subtle glazes. Pieces are fired to either earthenware or stoneware temperatures.
